# What the James Hardie Warranty Actually Covers
Warranties matter. Especially on something that's supposed to last 30-50 years. James Hardie's warranty is one of the best in siding. But it's not a blank check.
Let me walk you through what you're actually getting.
## The Three Warranties You Care About
### 1. Substrate Warranty — 30 Years
This covers the actual fiber cement material.
**What's covered:**
- Manufacturing defects
- Material failing to meet specifications
- The siding basically not being what it's supposed to be
**What's NOT covered:**
- Normal weathering (that's just aging, not a defect)
- Damage from impacts, storms, or accidents
- Damage from improper installation
- Damage from pressure washing above 2,500 PSI
- Damage from harsh cleaners
**The good part:** It's non-prorated for the full 30 years. That matters. Lots of "lifetime" warranties pay you $50 in year 15. This one doesn't diminish.
**The catch:** It covers replacement material only. You're paying labor to remove and reinstall.
### 2. ColorPlus Finish Warranty — 15 Years
This is for the factory-applied paint finish. Only applies if you bought ColorPlus (not primed).
**What's covered:**
- Peeling
- Cracking
- Chipping
- Substantial fading (color change visible from normal viewing distance)
**What's NOT covered:**
- Normal/gradual fading over time
- Damage from improper cleaning
- Cut edges (those need touch-up paint—your responsibility)
- Field-applied paint if you painted over ColorPlus
- Color matching to existing older siding
**Why ColorPlus matters:** Try getting a 15-year warranty from a painter. You won't. The factory finish is genuinely superior to field-applied paint.
### 3. Workmanship Warranty — From Your Contractor
James Hardie doesn't warrant installation—your contractor does.
This is why who installs your siding matters as much as the siding itself.
**What we offer:**
- Workmanship warranty on our installation
- We handle warranty claims for you
- If something goes wrong with our work, we fix it
Not all contractors offer the same terms. Ask.
## What Voids the Warranty
This is where people get burned. The warranty exists, but it has conditions.
### Installation Problems
Your warranty can be void if:
- **Wrong fasteners** — type, size, spacing, depth
- **Missing house wrap** — weather barrier is required
- **Bad flashing** — improperly installed around windows, doors, penetrations
- **Wrong clearances** — siding too close to ground, rooflines, etc.
- **No caulking** — required at butt joints and terminations
- **Painted wrong** (primed products) — painted after 180 days
Notice a theme? These are all installation issues. The material is fine. The installation made it not fine.
**This is why certified installation matters.** Not because we're better than your brother-in-law (okay, we probably are), but because James Hardie's best warranty coverage comes with proper documentation of proper installation.
### Maintenance Problems
Your warranty can be void if you:
- Pressure wash above 2,500 PSI
- Use bleach-based or abrasive cleaners
- Let damage go unrepaired (it spreads)
- Remove or damage the product identification labels
- Modify the product inappropriately
Most of this is common sense. Don't attack your siding with a pressure washer and don't clean it with chemicals meant for your driveway.
## How to Actually Use the Warranty
If you think you have a warranty claim:
### Step 1: Document
Take clear photos. Note when you first saw the problem. Find your installation records (you kept those, right?).
### Step 2: Contact James Hardie
Online at jameshardie.com/warranty or call 1-888-J-HARDIE.
They'll want:
- Your address and contact info
- Installation date
- Product details
- Photos of the issue
- Photos of the product label if visible
### Step 3: Wait for Assessment
They might:
- Approve based on photos
- Send someone to inspect
- Request material samples
### Step 4: Resolution
If approved, you get replacement material shipped to you or your contractor. You (or your contractor) pay for labor.
**Realistic timeline:** A few weeks minimum. This isn't Amazon Prime.
## How This Compares to Other Siding Warranties
| Brand | Substrate | Finish | Transferable |
| ----------------- | --------------------------- | -------------------- | ---------------- |
| James Hardie | 30 years (non-prorated) | 15 years (ColorPlus) | Yes |
| LP SmartSide | 50 years (prorated after 5) | None (primed only) | Yes |
| CertainTeed Vinyl | Lifetime (prorated) | N/A | Yes, with limits |
| Basic Vinyl | Varies widely | N/A | Usually limited |
James Hardie's non-prorated substrate warranty is actually stronger than LP SmartSide's longer warranty in practice. Prorated means they pay less over time; non-prorated means full coverage through year 30.
The ColorPlus finish warranty is unique—nobody else offers factory-finish coverage like that.
## Making Sure Your Warranty Is Protected
### At Installation
1. **Use certified contractors.** Documentation matters.
2. **Keep everything.** Receipts, contracts, product spec sheets.
3. **Take photos.** Before, during, after installation.
4. **Get a certificate.** Ask for written confirmation of proper installation.
### After Installation
1. **Follow maintenance guidelines.** Gentle cleaning, regular inspection.
2. **Fix damage promptly.** Small issues become bigger issues become warranty-voiding issues.
3. **Document maintenance.** Sounds excessive, but it protects you.
4. **Keep those labels.** The product ID labels on the siding help with claims.
