# Fiber Cement vs LP SmartSide: An Honest Comparison
You've decided vinyl isn't for you. Smart move. Now you're choosing between fiber cement (usually James Hardie) and LP SmartSide (engineered wood). Both are solid choices. Both cost real money.
We install both products. A lot of both. Here's what I actually think.
## The 30-Second Version
| What Matters | Fiber Cement (James Hardie) | LP SmartSide |
|--------------|----------------------------|--------------|
| Material | Cement, sand, cellulose | Engineered wood strands |
| Cost installed | $10 - $15/sq ft | $8 - $12/sq ft |
| Weight | Heavy (matters for install) | About half as heavy |
| Lifespan | 30-50 years | 25-40 years |
| Warranty | 30 years flat | 5 years full, 50 years prorated |
| Fire | Won't burn. Period. | Fire-rated but combustible |
| Hail | Can crack | Handles impacts well |
| Painting | ColorPlus = 15+ years | Must paint, repaint every 7-15 yrs |
## The Case for Fiber Cement
### It Doesn't Care About Weather
Cement doesn't rot. Doesn't swell. Doesn't care if it's humid. Termites can't eat it. Fungus can't grow on it.
In Pennsylvania and New Jersey—where summer humidity hits 80% and winter brings freeze-thaw cycles—that matters. I've pulled off 40-year-old fiber cement that looked better than 15-year-old wood siding.
### Fire Doesn't Faze It
Non-combustible. That's not "fire-resistant" or "flame-retardant." It literally won't burn.
House next door catches fire? Your siding isn't adding fuel. Grill too close to the wall? Not a problem. Lightning hits your oak tree and embers rain down? You're fine.
This matters more than most people think until they need it to.
### ColorPlus Changes the Game
James Hardie's factory-applied finish isn't just paint. It's baked on in a controlled environment, comes with a 15-year warranty, and actually lasts.
You install it, you're done. No painting for 15+ years. No scheduling painters. No weather delays. No "did they prep it right?" worries.
That convenience has real value.
### The Track Record
James Hardie has been making fiber cement since the 1980s. Millions of homes. Decades of data. We know exactly how it performs over time because we've watched it perform over time.
There's something to be said for a proven product.
### The Downsides
**It's heavy.** Really heavy. About 2.5 pounds per square foot. That means more labor, more handling, sometimes structural considerations on older homes.
**It can crack.** Hit fiber cement hard enough—hail, ladder, baseball—and it'll crack. Not shatter like glass, but you'll see it.
**It costs more.** 15-30% more than LP SmartSide installed. That's real money on a whole-house job.
**Cutting it is messy.** Creates silica dust, which is a health hazard. Proper equipment and safety gear aren't optional.
## The Case for LP SmartSide
### Impact Resistance Is Unmatched
LP SmartSide flexes instead of cracking. That's engineered wood for you.
Got hail? It dents maybe, but doesn't crack. Ladder accident? Barely leaves a mark. Kid hits it with a baseball? No problem.
For areas that see regular hail, this is a real advantage.
### It's Lighter
About 1.2 pounds per square foot—less than half of fiber cement. That means:
- Easier handling for crews
- Faster installation
- Works on walls that might not support heavier materials
- Lower labor costs
### The Price Point Is Better
Typically 15-25% less than James Hardie installed. On a $30,000 fiber cement job, that's $4,500 - $7,500 saved. Not nothing.
### Wood-Friendly Installation
Cuts with regular saws. Nails without pre-drilling. Works like the wood it's made from. Contractors who know wood framing already know how to work with it.
### That Warranty, Though
LP's warranty structure is interesting:
- Years 1-5: 100% coverage including labor
- Years 6-50: Prorated coverage
That 5-year full coverage including labor is actually generous. Most warranties make you pay labor from day one.
### The Downsides
**It needs paint.** No factory finish option. You're painting within 180 days of install, then repainting every 7-15 years. That's cost and hassle over time.
**It's still wood (sort of).** Yes, it's treated. Yes, it's engineered. But it can absorb moisture more than cement-based products. Proper installation is critical.
**Every cut edge matters.** Miss sealing an edge? Water gets in there. The product becomes a problem. This is 100% installer skill—the material doesn't fail, the installation fails.
**Shorter track record.** LP SmartSide dates to 1997. Good history, but not 40 years of data like fiber cement.
## How They Actually Compare
### In PA/NJ Weather
Our climate tests siding:
- Freeze-thaw cycles: 60-100+ per year
- Summer humidity: 65-80%
- Winter storms, ice, occasional hail
| Challenge | Fiber Cement | LP SmartSide |
|-----------|-------------|--------------|
| Freeze-thaw | Handles it well | Handles it well |
| Humidity | No effect | Edge sealing critical |
| Hail | Can crack | Excellent |
| Ice/snow | No issue | No issue |
Both work here. Fiber cement has a slight edge on moisture; LP SmartSide wins on impact.
### Over 20 Years
| Cost Factor | Fiber Cement (ColorPlus) | LP SmartSide |
|-------------|-------------------------|--------------|
| Installation | $25,000 | $18,000 |
| Painting (initial) | $0 | $4,000 |
| Repaint at year 10 | $0 | $4,000 |
| Repairs | ~$500 | ~$500 |
| **20-year total** | **$25,500** | **$26,500** |
The upfront price difference mostly disappears over time. Fiber cement's higher initial cost gets offset by no painting.
### Appearance
Both look good. Both can mimic wood grain convincingly.
Fiber cement holds paint and color longer. LP SmartSide's painted finish depends on the paint job quality—great paint job looks great, mediocre paint job shows.
## My Actual Recommendation
### Go With Fiber Cement If:
- You're staying long-term (10+ years)
- You want to install it and forget it
- Fire resistance matters to you
- Your area has high humidity
- You don't want to deal with painters
### Go With LP SmartSide If:
- Budget is a real constraint
- You're in a hail-prone area
- You don't mind repainting occasionally
- The house might not handle the extra weight
- You have a great painter you trust
### What We Do Sometimes
On the right project, we use both. Fiber cement on the front and high-visibility sides. LP SmartSide on the back and sides people don't see.
You get the curb appeal where it matters, save money where it doesn't. Homeowners like this option more than you'd think.
